Building relationships with patients can be an incredibly rewarding experience, but it also comes with its challenges. The key lies in how you approach daily interactions and maintain a professional yet personable demeanor.
Maintaining Professional Boundaries
While it’s essential to establish trust and rapport, it’s equally important to maintain clear professional boundaries. Romantic relationships with patients are not only frowned upon but can also have serious professional and ethical repercussions. Spending significant time with patients can foster strong connections, but always proceed with caution in these situations to avoid potential conflicts or complications if the relationship doesn’t work out.
When it comes to friendships with patients, these too can be complex. Friendships are generally acceptable but should be approached carefully. Always perform due diligence and ensure the person’s character aligns with your values. Some individuals may seem like great friends initially but could complicate your life later. Stay vigilant.
Guidelines for Building Positive Relationships
Based on personal experience and shared wisdom, here are a few essential guidelines for fostering healthy and professional relationships with patients:
Always Stay Professional
Remember, patients come to see you for your expertise. Your professional reputation, career, and your organization’s standing depend on each interaction. Any inappropriate behavior can tarnish your career and make it difficult to secure future opportunities. Stay professional, no matter the situation.
Show Your Personality and Have Fun
Bringing your authentic self to work fosters a more enjoyable and fulfilling environment. Being relatable and engaging with patients can enhance their experience. However, tailor your approach based on individual personalities to ensure everyone feels comfortable.
Be Cautious with Personal Contact Information
Avoid sharing your personal phone number unless absolutely necessary. Instead, leverage professional tools like company-approved communication apps to maintain boundaries. For instance, I once made the mistake of sharing my personal number, which led to persistent and inappropriate contact. Since then, I’ve used tools like Weave, which allow for professional yet secure communication.
Open Up, But Set Limits
It’s okay to share bits of your life and experiences to foster a connection, but be mindful of how much and to whom you share. Unfortunately, oversharing can sometimes lead to inappropriate behavior or uncomfortable situations. Both men and women face these challenges, so proceed with caution and read the room.
Final Thoughts
Building strong relationships with patients is a natural and essential part of what we do. Done well, it can lead to lifelong connections and mutual respect. However, always remain aware of the potential pitfalls and take steps to protect yourself and your organization. Strive to foster trust, maintain professionalism, and create a positive environment for everyone involved.
